In a significant stride towards securing the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination, President Joe Biden is projected to emerge victorious in Hawaii’s Democratic presidential contest, according to CNN’s latest projections. Biden outshone four other contenders, including the relatively obscure entrepreneur Jason Palmer, who recently clinched the American Samoa caucuses on Tuesday.
Other candidates in the race included self-help author Marianne Williamson and Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips, who withdrew from the contest earlier on Wednesday. Voters were also given the option to select “uncommitted,” a choice indicating dissatisfaction with Biden without endorsing any other candidate.
Hawaii’s Democratic Contest: A Firehouse Primary
The Democratic contest in Hawaii, which had 22 delegates to the Democratic National Convention up for grabs, was a firehouse primary. This type of primary is managed by the state’s Democratic Party, as opposed to the state government of Hawaii. The 2020 primary, which was won by Biden, was conducted entirely by mail. However, party officials announced in January a shift to a more cost-effective method of conducting a one-day contest without mail-in voting this year.
Upcoming Republican Caucuses
Meanwhile, Hawaii’s Republican caucuses are slated for March 12.
