In a recent statement, Ron Klain, former chief of staff to President Joe Biden, suggested that the president’s focus on infrastructure might be misplaced. Klain argued that Biden should instead concentrate on addressing the economic concerns of Americans, especially as he seeks re-election, according to Politico.
“The president seems to be overly engrossed in infrastructure talks, often seen inaugurating bridges. However, for an average American visiting a grocery store and finding the prices of essentials like eggs and milk soaring, the existence of a new bridge hardly matters,” Klain was quoted saying in an audio obtained by Politico.
While Klain acknowledged the administration’s efforts to enhance the nation’s infrastructure as commendable, he cautioned that it might be a misguided venture during a discussion hosted by “Democracy: A Journal of Ideas”. He added, “The president is not a congressman. His focus should not be limited to infrastructure alone.”
CNN has attempted to reach Klain for further comments. Klain, who shares a longstanding relationship with Biden, stepped down from his White House position early last year. Known for his meticulous involvement in a wide range of issues, from political to policy matters, Klain was known to monitor gas prices even in the wee hours.
In a subsequent interview with Politico, Klain reiterated his stance, emphasizing that the president’s re-election messaging could be more potent. He suggested that the president should highlight his efforts to alleviate the strain on family budgets and his plans to reduce costs and increase incomes.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates defended Biden’s campaign talking points, asserting that the president is addressing a variety of issues that affect Americans. Bates stated, “President Biden is tirelessly working to expand the middle class and reduce costs like prescription drugs, while opposing the trickle-down agenda proposed by Republican officials on behalf of wealthy special interests.”
In recent weeks, Biden has been visiting battleground states to consolidate support, focusing on housing costs, job creation in clean energy and manufacturing sectors. He aims to convince Americans that his administration’s policies are working in their favor. The Biden team also hopes to appeal to voters, especially moderates, with arguments on reproductive rights and democracy as he prepares to face former President Donald Trump once again.
