In a significant political development this week, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu declared his support for former President Donald Trump’s presidential bid. This announcement comes in the wake of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s suspension of her campaign, a candidate who had previously received Sununu’s endorsement.
Speaking to WMUR on Thursday, Sununu stated, “I’m going to support the ticket. I’m going to support Donald Trump.” However, he was quick to add that his primary focus would remain on his home state.
The outgoing Republican governor, whose term concludes this year, expressed no regret over his past criticism of Trump’s electability or age. Despite this, he affirmed his preference for Trump over current President Joe Biden, citing perceived shortcomings in Biden’s management, understanding of immigration issues, and fiscal responsibility.
Sununu’s endorsement of Trump follows a period of active campaigning and vocal advocacy for Haley, who withdrew from the Republican presidential race on Wednesday after Trump’s Super Tuesday triumph. The New Hampshire governor had endorsed Haley in December, ahead of his state’s primary, and had consistently praised the strength of her campaign prior to her exit.
Interestingly, Sununu had previously challenged Trump’s legal arguments, labeling the former president’s claim of immunity from prosecution as “crazy.” He asserted, “Just because you’re a politician does not put you above the law, period.”
Despite his frequent criticism of Trump, Sununu had always maintained his intention to support the Republican nominee. When questioned by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins in January about whether he would support Trump even if he was a convicted felon, Sununu responded affirmatively, “I will support the Republican nominee, absolutely.”
Sununu, who once contemplated a 2024 presidential bid himself, announced in June that he would not seek the nomination. He cited the former president and the expanding GOP field as factors in his decision. He also stated that the Republican Party is “clearly moving on” from Trump, expressing doubt over Trump’s ability to win the general election.
However, Sununu’s decision not to run for reelection this year has presented Democrats with a chance to secure a key state. Sununu, a popular figure in New Hampshire, is currently serving his fourth two-year term.
