Political Unrest on College Campuses Threatens Biden's Coalition

President Joe Biden’s coalition, which propelled him to victory in the 2020 election, is under strain as anti-Israel protests related to the Gaza conflict spread across college campuses. Pro-Israel Democrats, along with Republicans, are urging the president to take a stronger stance against antisemitic incidents occurring at educational institutions.

For months, Democrats have approached the Gaza conflict with caution. However, as protests intensify, college officials consider canceling graduation ceremonies, and Republicans amplify their criticism, Biden’s efforts to maintain unity are showing signs of wear.

White House Shifts Tone

On Tuesday, the White House appeared to adopt a firmer stance on the issue. White House national security communications adviser John Kirby condemned the forceful occupation of an academic building at Columbia University by protesters. He emphasized that a small group of students should not disrupt the academic experience for the rest.

However, this change in tone may not silence calls for Biden to adopt a more assertive approach towards the protesters. A stronger approach could further erode Biden’s popularity among younger voters, who, according to recent polls, are largely critical of his handling of the war.

Education Secretary Condemns Antisemitic Incidents

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona echoed the administration’s shift in tone during a Senate hearing on his department’s budget. He described the reported antisemitic incidents on campuses as “abhorrent” and expressed concern for Jewish students who fear attending classes due to harassment.

College Democrats of America Supports Protesters

Meanwhile, the College Democrats of America, a mainstream organization that supports Biden, expressed solidarity with the campus protesters. The group praised the “bravery” of students willing to risk arrest and suspension to advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people. However, they warned that the Democrats’ failure to unite for a permanent ceasefire and recognition of a Palestinian state could lead to youth disillusionment with the party.

Escalating Tensions

On Monday, before the Columbia University building was occupied by protesters, nearly two dozen House Democrats issued an ultimatum to the university board: clear the protest encampments or resign. The pro-Palestinian activists who occupied the building claimed they had “liberated” it in honor of a young Palestinian child killed during the Israeli military offensive in Gaza City.

Republicans Capitalize on the Situation

Republicans have been quick to respond to the developments. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans for a “House-wide crackdown on the virus of antisemitism spreading throughout college campuses.” The GOP also plans to spotlight Democrats with a vote on the Antisemitism Awareness Act, a bill that could become a political wedge in the upcoming November elections.

Democrats’ Dilemma

Biden has attempted to deflate the controversy surrounding the campus protests and Republican efforts to use the demonstrations as an election-year weapon. He has condemned the antisemitic protests and expressed sympathy for the Palestinians. However, the challenge remains for the Democrats to navigate this complex issue without alienating key segments of their base.
