In a significant stride towards their anticipated rematch, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump secured substantial victories on Super Tuesday. Over a dozen states held primaries or caucuses, marking the largest day of the nominating races thus far in the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s Triumph

Despite losing Vermont to Nikki Haley, Trump continued his dominance in the Republican nominating contest. CNN’s delegate estimate showed Trump securing 617 delegates to Haley’s 23. Trump now holds 893 delegates, 92% of those awarded so far, and is closing in on the 1,215 needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Biden’s Dominance

Despite facing a series of challenging headlines and low approval ratings, Biden dominated Super Tuesday, typically winning around 80% of the vote. The president clearly has the backing of his party’s rank-and-file, even with a noticeable protest vote in several states.

Warning Signs for Trump

Despite his victories, there were warning signs for Trump. Haley’s strongest performance came in cities, college towns, and suburbs, indicating potential weaknesses for Trump among college-educated voters in these regions.

Biden’s Challenges

For some voters, Biden’s support for the Israeli offensive in Gaza and refusal to publicly call for a ceasefire is unforgivable. This frustration, combined with his diminished standing with several critical constituencies, could depress Democratic turnout and potentially impact the election outcome.

Haley’s Silence

On election night, Haley’s campaign was noticeably silent. Her silence underscored the state of the GOP nominating battle and the dwindling chances of her securing the nomination.

Third-Party Candidates

The effect of third-party candidates is also a growing concern. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is slowly gaining enough ballot access to potentially disrupt the race.

North Carolina in the Spotlight

North Carolina, Biden’s best chance to flip a state from the 2020 map, is also home to the highest-stakes governor’s race of the year. The contest between GOP Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein will draw national attention.

Good News for North Carolina Republicans

Ret. Army Col. Laurie Buckhout’s primary win in North Carolina’s 1st District is good news for national Republicans hoping to defeat freshman Democratic Rep. Don Davis in the state’s only competitive congressional district.
