In a recent interview, New Hampshire’s Republican Governor Chris Sununu declared his intention to back Donald Trump in the event of his nomination as the GOP candidate, irrespective of any potential felony conviction. Sununu’s statement came during a conversation with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, where he was questioned about Trump’s suitability for a presidential rerun.
“The majority of us will undoubtedly back the Republican nominee. There’s no doubt about that,” Sununu stated, emphasizing the need for a change from the current administration under President Joe Biden.
When probed about his support for Trump in the hypothetical scenario of the former president being a convicted felon, Sununu, a known critic of Trump and an endorser of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, responded, “At this moment, it appears most of America would vote for him, given his lead in hypothetical general election matchup polls.”
Sununu reiterated his commitment to the Republican nominee, stating, “It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a Republican governor, along with most of America, is ready to oppose Biden. We need a change in this country.”
He further criticized Biden’s presidency, stating, “Biden’s performance as president is so poor that even Trump would win.”
Sununu’s comments arrived on the same day as another Trump critic, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, withdrew his 2024 campaign. Christie declared he would not support any candidate who fails to criticize the former president.
“Anyone who is unwilling to state that Trump is unfit to be president of the United States is themselves unfit to be president of the United States,” Christie said.
Sununu argued that Trump’s potential criminal charges aren’t influencing voters and that Trump would be a strong contender in a potential rematch with Biden. “I can be as surprised at that as you, but that’s the current situation,” he said.
Despite his support for Trump, Sununu defended Haley as the best candidate to challenge Biden and aid the party in winning down-ballot races. “She wins Senate seats, governorships, and brings those other opportunities to the states, and the country, to actually get stuff done,” he concluded.
